Seeing a black cat cross your path, breaking a mirror, having 13 people around a table, walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella inside and spilling salt on the table are among the worst things that can happen to an Italian, even worse if they happen on Friday the 17th.
Che Sfiga! or Che Sfortuna are without a doubt the most appropriate phrases to use in these cases.
But why do Italians still believe in these things? Popular beliefs are slow to die, they are passed down from generation to generation and are often connected to religion. Even if not everyone believes them, many still allow themselves to be influenced by them.
